The Second Lowest Place in the World - 137 kilometers Turpan -- Mon, Aug 15, 2005 I have now been to the two lowest places in the world -- the Dead Sea and the Turpan Basin. The one great thing about biking to one of these places is that you know on the way there you are going down hill (tomorrow I'll tell you about the other side of the story...).
This is a place you don't want to miss -- not Turpan itself -- but the surrounding area; absolutely stunning. Incredible grapes at 15 cents/lb, fresh hami melons, blazing red mountains (and the heat to go with it), and some of the most beautiful people around (Uyighers).
